WOLF Martial Arts Academy is a family-owned Hapkido dojang serving Yorktown, Hampton Roads, Newport News, Poquoson, Williamsburg. We teach a real martial art — and we use it to build people.
01 / Owner & Chief Instructor
Brian
Ulsh.
Brian Ulsh began training in 2011 after years running his own businesses, and fell for the movement, the philosophy and the attitude that come with serious martial arts study. As a husband, father, business owner, student and teacher, his specialty is using Hapkido to build kindness and compassion, work ethic, health and self-defense, personal empowerment and real community engagement. Every instructor on his staff is one of his own students.
Before WOLF, Brian ran a successful lawn care business. Then he sat down and wrote a personal mission statement, and realized he wasn't living the life he was meant to live. He walked away from that business and opened WOLF to do what he'd found on the mat: help people become stronger, kinder and more useful to their communities.
He teaches Kwan Nyom Hapkido, and the name says what he believes. WOLF stands for Way Of Life Foundation. In his words: "Martial arts is a way of life. Everything we do and how we train shows up in what we do out in the real world."
Every assistant instructor on our floor came up through this program as Brian's own student. Nobody is hired off the street to teach your child.

Brian is a member of The 100, a martial arts school-owner ethics group.

Families From
All Over.
We're based in Yorktown, and families drive in from Hampton Roads, Newport News, Poquoson, Williamsburg. Plenty of them make a thirty-minute trip each way and tell us it's worth it — usually because of what they see in their child at home, not on the mat.
